Nearly 170,000 of our troops face another bleak holiday season in Iraq, Afghanistan and other outposts around the world. For many, this will be the third or even fourth straight holiday they have spent in countries that do not celebrate, or care about, Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa.
The United Service Organizations (USO) has a mission: To make sure that all 170,000 of these courageous men and women who will not be home for the holidays know they have not been forgotten.
The USO is not part of the government. It is a non-profit charitable organization chartered by Congress in 1941. The USO provides essential and unique services as well as entertainment for our GIs and their families.
The USO provides the following services to our troops: Operation Phone Home, Cyber Canteens, Operation Enduring Care, Operation Care Package, Mobile Canteens and USO Entertainment Tours.
The USO provides the following services to our troops' families: Overseas Community Centers, Childcare Services and Celebrity Education Programs.
For more information on the USO or to make a charitable donation to assist our troops overseas, please visit www.USO.org.
